Salesforce Merchant Accounts and Payment Processors

You can use Chargent to connect directly to your Payment Gateway, and process payments in Salesforce. The actual payment processing is done via your Merchant Account, which is your account at your Payment Processor (The terms Payment Processor and Merchant Account are often used interchangeably, though they have slightly different meanings).

To begin credit card and ACH transactions through Salesforce with Chargent, you need a merchant account from a payment processor as well as a payment gateway. Some companies bundle the two services together, but they can also be purchased separately. Many merchant accounts can provide you with a different payment gateway account upon request as well.

Payment Gateway

The gateway is a service running on Internet servers that securely connects the platform where transactions are being initiated (eg. Salesforce with Chargent installed, or an eCommerce web site) to the payment processor. When you process a transaction through Chargent, the credit card info is sent securely through the gateway to the processor.

Payment Gateways fulfill a number of other functions, such as fraud screening tools, address verification, and securely storing and tokenizing sensitive cardholder data. The token returned by your payment gateway is what gets stored in Salesforce, should you need to use it for future transactions.

“We needed to find a platform when our Merchant Account told us we could no longer leverage their admin portal for charging patients. We were able to get Chargent up and running within just a couple of weeks.”

David M, August 2021

Payment Processor

The payment processor hosts the merchant accounts. It is responsible for securely receiving the data sent by the gateway. When it obtains the information needed to process the payment, it begins to handle the transaction and transfer money from the customer to the merchant’s bank account.

Mix and Match Merchant Accounts

Most payment processors can accept connections from multiple payment gateways. This is not always easy to find on their web sites however, since they may prefer that you use their own gateway or a private labeled gateway. A call with your sales rep may produce other options, however.

As an example, if you use Chase Paymentech for your Merchant Account, you can use Chase’s Orbital Payment Gateway, but you can also ask them to give you an account with Authorize.net as your Payment Gateway. Choosing Authorize.net will make it a snap to connect your Chase Merchant Account to Salesforce via Chargent.

Bundled Only

Some merchant accounts provide their service as a bundle, and do not allow the use of different payment gateways. Stripe would be one example of this.

Gateway Only

Some payment gateways do not provide payment processing / merchant accounts, preferring to focus on the payment gateway services. Examples would be:

  • Authorize.net
  • CyberSource
  • PayPal Payflow Pro
  • USAePay

We’ve listed the merchant account providers who work with each one of these gateway-only Payment Gateways below. These Payment Gateways make it easy to connect your Merchant Account to Salesforce via Chargent, and offer superior gateway services and advanced features in some cases.
